The Cost of Being Seen

It used to be that we lived, and then we shared; what happened offline determined what went online. Somewhere along the way that flipped. Now, increasingly, we live to share, curating our lives for the feed.

The when, why, and how of that shift — from social media as a space for connection to a stage for performance — is the subject of my Master’s Research Project at OCAD University.

I came to the study from inside the system, a millennial fluent in these platforms, yet old enough to remember what they were before they were optimised, when posting was reflexive rather than curated.
